What Employers Are Looking For

Verbal and Written Communication Skills

There are some skills that will greatly encourage potential employers to hire you. These skills will be looked for in just about every field, with some employers in particular focusing especially on certain skills. These skills will go a long way to helping you to achieve a better quality of work upon employment, too.

Let us start then, with perhaps one of the most important skills: verbal communication. Being able to communicate with co workers and customers is a key skill in work. You need to be able to clearly communicate ideas with your co workers, as this will go a long way in helping to keep a good standard of teamwork active, From a customer service perspective, how you communicate is largely what the average customer will remember when assessing the quality of your service, it is where the lasting impression they are left with is mostly formed. So, employers will definitely be looking for someone who shows solid vocal skills. It can also be beneficial, to certain sectors in particular, if you can speak in multiple languages.

Writing is an important skill as well. Although some jobs would require on writing skills more than others, most roles would at least call on some form of writing. A good example would be in customer communication, such as letters to (potential) clients.

Teamwork

Being able to work well in a team is essential to many jobs. Teamwork is so important as it can directly affect the flow of the operation. As mentioned, you must be able to interact well with each other and complete the required tasks effectively as a team. You need to be focused on which direction you are going, and moving forward together, at the same time utilising every team member skill and considering all suggestions. Remember, if you’re all pulling in different directions then the business is not going to be moving as smoothly as it should be. If you looking to progress to a leadership role, then being able to manage a team will be essential.

Teamwork is an important part of life here, so we look for people who love collaboration and want to learn, grow and share their achievements with others. Try and demonstrate examples of teamwork in your application

Commercial Awareness

Commercial awareness is an important skill. Commercial awareness is basically the idea of understanding the needs for your business and how to act accordingly. This is such a good skill as it means you can have a better understanding of how to take on tasks, have a good grasp of how your industry is performing, how your competitors are acting and how your customers are feeling. By having good commercial awareness, you can relate more realistically to the tasks and challenges that arise, and in turn act more effectively. It can also help you to think ahead of the game, as you can plan based on your knowledge, when using commercial awareness.

Be prepared. Be passionate. Be proactive. Take time to understand the industry before applying.

Drive

Now drive, could not be more important. It is fair to say that most employers will be looking for someone with drive. If a person appears to lack that particular attribute, it is unlikely the employer will have any interest in hiring them. After all, would you want to hire someone who lacks drive if you were the boss? If they lack the working drive, it’s unlikely they will be performing to the top of their game or wanting to progress further and do the best for the company.

Organisation Skills

Organisation is one of those things that really can make a world of difference to the completion of your work tasks. If you are organising things well, for example the best order of tasks, good time management and planning, you will be setting yourself up to good task execution.

Flexibility

Here is something else employers will love you for: flexibility. If they know they can count on you to work at short notice, do some extra hours and not mind having to work unsocial times of the day, you’ll be a very appealing prospect as many others will not be able to match that, and employers need to fill those gaps. Flexibility is not just about working extra, but also in the sense of being able to adapt to changes within your working environment, and not falling in to trouble the moment anything new happens-it is about adapting.

Problem Solving Skills

Problem solving is key, it is required in every single job as there will always be problems that need to be solved, and the better they are solved the better job you’ll be doing. It also helps to be able to perform well under pressure with problem solving, to keep a clear and calm head.

Professionalism

You’ll want to show your professionalism, and be keen to share your ideas and thoughts, and also welcome others too. You’ll also want to be an honest individual and act with integrity, which not only reflects well on yourself, but your co-workers and in turn the company.

IT Skills

A couple of skills that will not be essential in every role, but currently useful in most jobs is IT skills. Most workplaces will have some form of computer, and some will use them extensively. In this modern age, there is a high chance it would be a preferred skill for employees to have. Numeracy is handy, mostly in a form of more basic Maths knowledge, but occasionally more advanced methods may be called on.
